From Chai Latte to Coffee Addict: My Melbourne Coffee Journey ☕✨

                                  Melbourne Coffee Culture Explained

From the first sip to the last drop, it’s a love affair that never fades." ☕💖

When I first arrived in Melbourne, I wasn’t a coffee person. My mornings began with milk tea, not espresso. But in this city, coffee isn’t just a drink—it’s practically a "religion". Seeing people power-walking with a coffee in one hand and bags in the other made me feel like I was missing out on something important (and "sophisticated"). So, I gave it a try, as I couldn’t help but think, "Okay, I need to fit in here. Starting small, but oh guys!!, look at me now—"a proud caffeine convert"

As, I started copying the trend, walking with my coffee in hand, feeling like a Melbourne local. Slowly but surely, it became more than just a habit. It was like I couldn’t start my day without that rich, aromatic sip. Before I knew it, I was addicted. I couldn’t go a day without my fix.

But, guess what? I also started noticing some skin issues popping up. Overconsumption of coffee can sometimes mess with your skin, and I learned that the hard way. 😬 While coffee is amazing for that morning kick, drinking too much can lead to dehydration and even trigger breakouts. Trust me, moderation is key!

So, let’s dive into the pros and cons, shall we? Let me take you through my hilarious and heartfelt journey, from sipping chai latte to chasing Melbourne’s finest brews, and share a little science behind the obsession.

My Coffee Crawl Across Melbourne: A Tale of Evolution:

1. Roasting Warehouse – Airport West

This was the starting point. A hesitant me ordered a Chai Latte, thinking, Let’s ease into this coffee thing. I loved the cozy vibe, but my “no coffee, please” felt like a crime in this temple of beans. The chai was warm and spicy, but little did I know this would soon be replaced by the glorious flat white.

2. The Coffee Club – Craigieburn/Essendon DFO

Here’s where I dabbled with my first cappuccino. It was frothy, chocolate-dusted, and made me feel fancy. But truth be told, I didn’t understand the coffee culture yet. I was that person who took one sip, frowned, and asked, “Why does it taste bitter?” (Oh, how far I’ve come!)

3. Friction – Essendon Fields

This place was a game-changer. I ordered a mocha and thought, This is dessert in a cup! Where has this been all my life? The ambience was as delightful as the coffee—stylish yet comforting. Friction introduced me to the magic of combining chocolate with caffeine. 😍

4. Dairy Queen – Glenroy

Don’t let the name fool you—this cafe is a hidden gem for coffee lovers. By this time, I was braver. I went for a latte and realized how Melbourne baristas are low-key magicians. Every sip was a perfect balance of milk and espresso, with none of that bitterness I once feared.

5. Forget Me Not Eatery – Greenvale

A cafe that lived up to its name. This was where I had my first long black, thinking I’d finally conquered “real coffee.” Spoiler alert: I hadn’t. It was intense, bold, and borderline scary, but hey, I survived.

6. Axil Coffee Roasters – Melbourne Central

Ah, Axil, my weekday savior! Whether I was running late or just needed a pick-me-up, this place was my go-to. Their flat white is pure perfection—smooth, creamy, and rich. It’s like getting a warm hug in a cup.

7. Ten Square Cafe – Lonsdale Street

Tucked in the hustle of the CBD, Ten Square feels like a calm oasis. I once ordered their cold brew and felt like I’d unlocked Melbourne coffee level 10. Cold brew is an experience—it’s coffee, but smoother, less acidic, and weirdly refreshing. Perfect for hot days when you want caffeine without the sweat.

8. Golden Mug Cafe – CBD

This cafe is where I tried a magic—a Melbourne specialty. It’s essentially a strong flat white made with less milk, and it tastes, well, magical. This drink is proof that Melbourne baristas don’t just make coffee; they create art.

9. Brunetti – Carlton

Brunetti is an iconic institution, and their coffee doesn’t disappoint. But let’s be real—the pastries steal the show here. My combo? A classic latte with a slice of ricotta cheesecake. Is it indulgent? Yes. Do I regret it? Never.

10. Moore Cafe – Apollo Bay

During a coastal escape, Moore Cafe introduced me to the joy of locally sourced beans. Their cappuccino tasted like the ocean breeze—light, fresh, and oh-so-satisfying. Road trip coffee never tasted so good! 🚗☀️

11. Feekah Cafe – Moone Ponds

Feekah is a vibe. Their specialty brews are like liquid art, and the staff here knows how to make you feel like a coffee connoisseur, even if youre just winging it like me. The decor? Instagram-worthy. The coffee? Life-worthy.

12. @7 Cafe – Wyndham Village

This gem in Wyndham Village feels like home with a side of caffeine. The cozy atmosphere and friendly baristas make it the perfect spot for a lazy weekend coffee.

Word on the street (okay, from one of my closest friends) is that they’ve got the best coffee machine imported straight from Italy. Truth or not, the coffee is undeniably top-notch, and every sip makes you believe it might just be true. Add to that the heavenly aroma of freshly brewed coffee, and it’s no wonder this cafe keeps pulling me back! ☕✨

Coming from India, where coffee was simply 'coffee'—usually a visit to "Café Coffee Day" or "Starbucks"—little did I know about the world of coffee varieties! ☕️🇮🇳 After diving deep into Melbourne’s coffee culture, I realized there’s so much more to coffee than I ever imagined! From flat whites to long blacks, here’s what I’ve learned and I’m excited to share with you all the types of coffee you need to know about!

The Types of Coffee You Need to Know About ☕️

1. Flat White:

The pride of Melbourne’s coffee culture! A smooth espresso base with velvety steamed milk. If you're new to coffee, this is your starting point. It’s creamy but not too heavy.

2. Long Black:

This one’s for the serious coffee drinkers. It’s made by adding hot water to a double shot of espresso, creating a strong, bold cup. Melbourne's long blacks are seriously kickin’.

3. Cappuccino:

The classic! A perfect blend of espresso, steamed milk, and foam. Sometimes you’ll find artists drawing swirls or patterns with the foam. It’s like a coffee and art in one.

4. Latte:

If you're after something smooth but with a mild coffee taste, a latte’s your friend. The milky goodness with that espresso shot is like a warm hug.

5. Cold Brew:

For the hotter months in Melbourne, cold brew coffee is a life-saver. It's coffee brewed slowly in cold water, resulting in a less acidic, smooth taste that's perfect for sipping on a warm afternoon.

The Pros and Cons of Coffee: Real Talk

What is it about coffee that makes it such a love-hate relationship?

The Pros

  • Productivity Partner: Coffee helps you power through deadlines (or just Monday mornings).
  • Mood Lifter: Feeling grumpy? A latte/mocha can fix that.
  • Community Builder: Coffee brings people together—whether it’s a cafe date or a casual catch-up.

The Cons

  • Overconsumption Woes: My skin had a mini meltdown when I overdid it. Lesson learned: Balance is key.
  • Dependency: You start with one cup, then two, then suddenly you can’t function without it.
  • Expense: At $5 a pop, Melbourne coffee can burn a hole in your wallet.

Why Melbourne is the Coffee Capital of the World 🌍

Passioista47

Melbourne’s coffee obsession began in the 1950s with Italian migrants introducing espresso culture. Today, the city boasts over 2,000 cafes, each offering unique flavours and vibes. Melbourne baristas are known for their skill and creativity, setting global standards.

The city’s laneways are a coffee lover’s paradise, from hole-in-the-wall spots to grand roasteries. Melbourne doesn’t just serve coffee—it celebrates it.

But hey!!, we’re not the only city with a coffee reputation. Italy may have its espresso culture, and Vienna is known for its historic coffee houses. But Melbourne's coffee scene is a whole vibe, a lifestyle, and something that locals take seriously.

Fun Fact: Coffee’s Evolution ☕️🌍

Fun fact #1:Did you know that coffee has been around for centuries? It all started in Ethiopia, where legend says a goat herder named Kaldi discovered coffee after noticing his goats bouncing off the walls after eating some berries. Since then, coffee beans have traveled the world, and today, Melbourne is one of the best places to experience the evolution of coffee.

Fun fact #2: Research suggests that coffee can actually improve brain function by increasing focus and attention. So, your next cup could make you a genius! 😎

At present, out of all the coffees I've tried, mocha is my true love—because let’s be honest, it’s basically dessert disguised as coffee! 🍫☕ My colleagues and friends love teasing me, calling mocha a "kid's drink"—like I’m sipping on hot chocolate in a coffee world. 🍫☕

But hey, my taste buds don’t care about their jokes! "Mocha" is my happy place, and let me tell you, my stomach agrees. Other coffees? They’ve caused a few emergency sprints to the restroom 😅. Mocha, on the other hand, is gentle on my system and gives me the perfect balance of caffeine and comfort. So call it what you want—my gut and I know we’ve found our match! 💃✨

From being a coffee skeptic to now loving my mocha, it’s been a wild ride! ☕❤️

And let’s not forget Micky—my latte/cappuccino-lover. He's all about his classic latte/cappuccino, while Im hooked on my mocha. Our coffee preferences are worlds apart, so we dont shareit's a battle of brews! 😜

So, if you’re in Melbourne, whether you’re into a classic cappuccino, a rich mocha, or something bold and strong, there’s a perfect cup waiting for you in this city. Come! grab a cup, savor the moment, and let the city’s coffee culture sweep you off your feet.

My Favourite "Friction Cafe""Feekah Cafe".

Let’s raise our mugs to the love of coffee, the joy of discovery, and of course, the never-ending quest for that perfect sip! ☕💫Cheers to the perfect brew!
