Navigating the Storm: Students’ Lifestyle in Australia and Social Media Influence

Australia’s vibrant education scene attracts thousands of students each year, creating a melting pot of cultures and aspirations. This E-mail-

While the lifestyle here is celebrated for its beaches, barbies πŸ”, and thriving nightlife, the struggles beneath the surface often go unnoticed.

As an educator in Civil Construction Design, I interact with international students daily, and I’ve seen firsthand the pressures they face—not just in academics but in adapting to life in a new country. And let’s be honest, these pressures can sometimes be amplified by the ever-present influence of social media. Hearing their struggles—especially when amplified by social media—often tugs at my heartstrings πŸ˜”

The Social Media Trap

Trapped - the secret ways social media is built to be addictive (and what you can do to fight back) - BBC Science Focus Magazine

Social media is a double-edged sword — it connects but also isolates. Students scrolling their Insta feeds, envying influencer lifestyles, can easily fall into the comparison trap. They forget that posts are just curated highlights, not realities.

During the recent Christmas party at one of my organizations, there was a discussion about social media, and students from almost all corners of the world shared their views on online world. Let me tell you, it was like a reality show.

  • One student admitted to scrolling through Instagram and feeling like her life was a total flop compared to the influencers living in picture-perfect mansions and joked, ‘I need a pet tiger to compete with these influencers!’ but the pressure to measure up to perfectly filtered lives is real.
  • Now, here’s where it gets interesting—some students introduced me to the concept of “finsta.” And I’m like, “What’s that? Is it a new type of Insta?” πŸ˜‚ Apparently, a “finsta” is a fake Instagram account, where they post real, unfiltered moments without the pressure of likes and validation. It’s like their “secret” world to be themselves, away from the Insta-glam. But the plot thickens: some students even created finstas to check on others—because, apparently, it's too much effort to scroll through someone's perfect feed with your real account.
  • Another student admitted, ‘I posted a picture of my dog, and it only got 20 likes. Now, I’m questioning my entire life’s purpose!’ See, how the anxiety of getting likes had reached a new level.

I blinked, unsure whether to laugh or be concerned. Is this what the world has come to? A life measured by likes and comments? Social media has truly redefined priorities for this generation, and moments like these leave me both amused and worried about where we’re heading. πŸΆπŸ’»From the constant need for validation to comparing their lives to the highlight reels online, it’s easy to feel like they’re missing out. So, let’s take a moment to laugh at social media obsessions, but also remember that we’re all in this digital mess together!

Peer Pressure & Behavioral Shifts

Moving to Australia for studies is exciting, but it comes with challenges, especially for students entering civil construction design. They face the technical jargon like "load-bearing capacity" and "dynamic load calculations," which can feel like a foreign language. On top of that, there’s the pressure to fit in. Social media influencers make life look glamorous, creating FOMO and students sometimes feel they need to join in on the fun—whether it’s partying or road trips—while balancing studies.

For some, though, the main goal isn’t just understanding designs, but securing Australian πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊPR.

Reality Check: Dreaming of Aussie PR like it's a free Tim Tam πŸͺ—sweet, irresistible, but oh-so-hard to get! πŸ‡¦πŸ‡ΊπŸ’Ό

Step 1: Google 'How to PR'; Step 2: Panic; Step 3: Repeat. πŸ˜‚

Jokes apart, as a result, peer pressure becomes a big factor. Many students start experimenting with things like alcohol πŸ» or even drugs πŸ’¨, glamorized endlessly on platforms like Snapchat and TikTok. The fear of missing out on the "cool" lifestyle can sometimes overpower the need for balance in their studies and personal lives.

For us teachers, it’s tough to get students to focus on technical concepts while they're distracted by everything around them. Trying to break down complex engineering terms and concepts often feels like I’m speaking in riddles to a group of students more interested in the next Instagram post than understanding load calculations. It’s a constant challenge to balance their real-life pressures with the academic demands of their studies.

Family Ties, Strained Parents’ Biggest Fear?

Parents fear

Parents always worry about losing touch with their kids, especially when they’re miles apart. For many students studying abroad, life looks perfect on social media, but reality often tells a different story like (Jazz- unreal name), for example. Her relatives in India and even me, see her Insta posts of fancy dinners and beach trips, thinking she’s living her best life. But during video calls, her parents noticed something's off. Behind those perfect posts, Jazz is juggling late-night study sessions, financial struggles, and loneliness. Her parents complained me that they notice delayed replies, but she doesn’t want to worry them. On questioning one day she replied, “How do I tell them I’m struggling financial and mental issues without breaking their hearts?” she asks me.

As a teacher, I often feel like an unofficial parent to these students and a strong need to support to navigate these challenges πŸ’¬.

This is a common hurdle for many students trying to balance expectations and reality. Social media shows highlights, but the real story often stays hidden.

Life as an international student in Australia is a mix of highs and lows—thriving on new experiences but quietly battling struggles. From mastering technical jargon to resisting the pull of peer pressure and managing strained family ties, students face challenges that are far from what their Instagram highlights suggest. πŸ“Έ✨

As someone who sees these hurdles daily, here are some tips for students to navigate the storm:

  1. Pause and Reflect: Before posting that "perfect" photo, ask yourself—does it truly matter how many likes you get? Focus on enjoying the moment rather than curating it for others.
  2.  Balance Fun and Focus: It’s okay to join a road trip πŸ›£️ or party, but don’t let it derail your goals. Remember, long-term growth is worth more than fleeting “coolness.”
  3. Communicate with Family: Your parents care about you deeply. Don’t hesitate to share your real feelings. “I’m having a tough week” can bring more comfort than a staged beach selfie. πŸŒŠ
  4. Find Your Tribe: Connect with friends, classmates, or mentors who understand your journey. Building a support system can make a world of difference.
  5. Take Breaks from Social Media: Feeling overwhelmed by the online world? Take a breather. Step away from the constant stream of posts and focus on yourself. πŸ’†‍♂️

A Note for Parents πŸ’Œ

As much as students face challenges, parents often feel the strain too. Here are a few tips to bridge the gap:

  1. Be Patient: If your child isn’t sharing everything, it doesn’t mean they don’t care. Give them space, but remind them you’re always there to listen.
  2. Ask Open-Ended Questions: Instead of “Are you okay?” try asking, “What’s been the best and hardest part of your week?” This invites honest conversations. πŸ’¬
  3. Encourage Without Pressure: Celebrate their small wins—whether it’s a great assignment or cooking their first meal πŸ³—and let them know it’s okay to stumble.
  4. Stay Connected in Fun Ways: Share jokes, family updates, or even funny memes πŸ˜„. A little laughter goes a long way in easing homesickness.
  5. Understand Their Reality: Life abroad isn’t always as glamorous as it looks on social media. Acknowledge their struggles and reassure them that it’s okay to be vulnerable.

    1. Moreover social media often portrays a filtered version of reality, showing only the highlights and good moments. It’s important to remember that what we see online is not the full story.
There’s a huge difference in what most of the students are showing and what’s going on with them.
